"The Win Happens in the 4th Quarter" Mantra by Germaine Bolds-Leftridge

Life is often compared to a game, and just like any game, there are different quarters that define our journey. While the first three quarters of our lives may have been filled with learning, growth, and challenges, it's the 4th quarter where the real magic happens.

What is the 4th Quarter of Life?

The 4th quarter of life typically refers to the stage of life that comes after retirement or when people enter their later years. It's a time marked by reflection, wisdom, and a shift in priorities. Entering the 4th quarter of life can be marked by various milestones such as retirement, becoming a grandparent, or experiencing changes in health and mobility. Additionally, we may find ourselves reflecting more on our life's purpose and legacy.

How to Win in the 4th Quarter

1: Overcome Fear of Aging

One of the biggest hurdles in embracing the 4th quarter of life is overcoming the fear of aging. Some feel society is going to view us as old without value.  Some of us may even feel that we look older than our real age.  I have never subscribed to the concept Anti-Aging.  Anti means to go against.  If you are anti-aging, you are not evolving or you are no longer existing.  Pro-aging means to move Forward or For.  It is a blessing and an honor to age.  The aging process gives you more time to do better, to learn more, and to live a long-fulfilled life.  Embracing this stage as a time of wisdom and experience can lead to greater fulfillment and contentment.

2:  Embrace New Opportunities

While the 4th quarter may signify the end of one's professional career, it also opens up a world of new opportunities. Whether it's starting a lifelong passion, starting a new career, or embarking on a journey of self-discovery, this stage offers the freedom to explore new avenues and reinvent oneself.

I started my new career as founder and creator of IKNOW Skincare for the 50-Platinum Group at the age of 62. I felt beauty brands weren’t speaking directly to me so I decided to build something that speaks to and represents US.  IKNOW is a skincare collection that promotes pro-aging, community, and positivity for Women of color. I’m not through reinventing myself….and neither should you.

3:  Cultivate Wisdom and Experience

With age comes wisdom, and the 4th quarter of life is a time to reflect on the lessons learned and experiences gained over the years. Embracing one's wisdom allows for a deeper understanding of oneself and the world around them, leading to greater clarity and perspective.

4:  Rediscover Passions and Hobbies

The 4th quarter of life provides an opportunity to reconnect with passions and hobbies that may have been put on hold during the hustle and bustle of earlier years. I have been an avid golfer for years and continue to play in tournaments today.  But one thing I never learned was how to swim.

I have had a pool for over 20 years but never did more than walk around in it or look cute beside it. At the tender age of 64, I decided to bite the bullet and finally learned how to swim. And guess what…. I love it!  So whether it's picking up an old hobby or discovering a new interest, pursuing these activities can bring you joy and fulfillment in this stage of life.

5:  Contribute to Community and Society

Rather than retreating from society, the 4th quarter presents an opportunity to give back and contribute to the community.  I have been a steward of public service all my adult life. I am a lifetime member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. and a member of the Columbia, MD chapter of the Links, Inc.  Advancing the mental, political, economic, health and wellness and social well-being of my community and our society at-large has been my mantra from a very early age.

Being in my 4th quarter hasn’t slowed me down, it’s invigorated me more.  We must create the change we want to see for future generations. Whether through volunteering, mentoring, or sharing wisdom with the next generations, we can leave a lasting impact and create a meaningful legacy that extends beyond their lifetime.

6:  Find Meaning in Everyday Moments

In the hustle of everyday life, it's easy to overlook the beauty and significance of small moments. The 4th quarter encourages us to slow down and find meaning in everyday experiences, whether it's spending time with loved ones, enjoying nature, or simply appreciating the present moment.

Spending time with my grandchildren gives me so much joy and pleasure.  I love teaching them the life lessons my mother shared with me such as picking fresh greens from the garden reinforcing living and eating healthy.

My only granddaughter, Farai is my mini-me…an outspoken firecracker who gets it from her Grandmomma. She tickles me with her expressiveness and her intelligence.

These are the moments we live for in the 4th quarter. Seeing and enjoying the fruits of our love and labor.

Live for the Win!

Embracing the 4th quarter mindset is about recognizing the value and potential of this stage of life. By overcoming fear, embracing change, and pursuing fulfillment and purpose, we can experience the true win. It's not about the destination, but rather the journey. I Know for sure life is great in the 4th Quarter and I encourage all to continue to live for the WIN!
